Domain Name System (DNS)

The Domain Name System (DNS) is the address book of the internet. It translates human-readable names like yourdomain.com into machine IP addresses so browsers, email, and apps know where to connect. Without DNS, users would need to memorize long strings of numbers just to visit a website.

At The Host Masters we provide fast Anycast DNS, DNSSEC for security, and straightforward DNS management so your website and email resolve quickly and reliably worldwide.

How DNS Works (In Plain English)

  1. User types your domain in a browser.
  2. The browser asks a recursive resolver (often your ISP or device) for the IP.
  3. If not cached, the resolver checks the root, then the TLD (e.g. .com, .nl, .be), then your authoritative nameservers.
  4. Your nameservers reply with DNS records (e.g. an A record with an IP).
  5. The resolver caches the result based on TTL (Time To Live), and the browser connects.

Changes to DNS can take time to spread globally — this is called DNS propagation.

Common DNS Record Types

Record Purpose Example
A Points a hostname to an IPv4 address. @ → 203.0.113.10
AAAA Points a hostname to an IPv6 address. @ → 2001:db8::10
CNAME Alias one name to another hostname. www → @
MX Mail exchange servers for your domain. @ → 10 mail.thehostmasters.com
TXT Text data for verification and policies (SPF, DKIM, DMARC). @ → v=spf1 include:_spf.example ~all
NS Authoritative nameservers for a zone. @ → ns1.thehostmasters.com
SRV Service records (VoIP, IM, etc.). _sip._tcp → sip.example.com

Unsure which records you need? Our team can set up email authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) and web records correctly the first time.

Nameservers & TLDs

Your nameservers tell the world where to find your DNS records. Most domains use country TLDs (like .nl for the Netherlands or .be for Belgium) or generic TLDs like .com, .net, and .org.

If you plan to expand across regions, it’s smart to register multiple extensions (e.g. yourbrand.nl, yourbrand.be, yourbrand.de) to protect your brand and future-proof your marketing.

DNS FAQs

DNS converts domain names into IP addresses so browsers and apps can locate your website and mail servers. Reliable DNS = faster loads and fewer outages.

Usually minutes to a few hours, depending on TTL values and global caches. We use smart defaults to minimize delays.

At minimum: MX to route mail, SPF (TXT) to authorize senders, DKIM (TXT) for signed mail, and DMARC (TXT) for policy and reporting.

Yes — DNSSEC adds cryptographic trust to your DNS, and Anycast speeds up responses by serving users from the nearest location.

Absolutely. We’ll import your zone, validate records, set safe TTLs, and coordinate a zero-downtime nameserver switch.

Protect Your Brand Across TLDs

You can register domains in multiple extensions (ccTLDs and gTLDs) even if you don’t yet operate in those countries. Secure your brand today to prevent imitators and simplify future expansion.

Recommendation: register your primary domain and the most relevant alternatives (.com, .nl, .be, .de) to stay discoverable and safe.
